Johnson Kanamugire
Johnson Kanamugire is a Rwandan journalist with ten years of experience in broadcast, print and online journalism. He focuses mostly on matters of conflict, politics and human rights and, more broadly, areas of governance and development.
A better part of his career he spent as a writer at The EastAfrican and Rwanda Today, both weeklies published by Nation Media Group, the largest independent media house in East and Central Africa. His work has also been featured in renowned regional and international publications such as The Guardian, TRT Africa and Daily Nation.
Johnson has extensively covered Rwandan politics, exposed political injustice and corruption scandals as well as issues affecting marginalized communities.
He is currently a freelancer for multiple media outlets in addition to leading the content production at NewsPaper Africa, a digital news platform he founded to highlight under-reported social, political and economic issues and events in his country and the wider African continent.
Johnson is an alumnus of the African Union (AU) Media Fellowship program and a member of African Journalists’ Network specializing in sustainable development and climate change.
He seeks to leverage the Berlin Scholarship Program to gain skills and expertise to cope with threats in the digital space. He plans to impart these skills to fellow journalists in Rwanda and across East Africa who are navigating a wide range of digital security threats.
