Shady Zalat is one of the eight current fellows of the Berlin Scholarship Program. He is the news editor of the independent Egyptian media outlet Mada Masr. Due to their critical reporting, Mada Masr’s website was blocked in Egypt by the authorities, but they continue to work and publish through mirror sites. In 2019 due to his work, Mada Masr’s office was raided by the Egyptian security forces, and Shady was detained briefly.
Shady received a degree in commerce before working for over a decade in journalism. Before his work at Mada Masr, he wrote and edited a weekly cultural section in print for Ain Newspaper.
He joined the Berlin Scholarship Program to learn more about dealing with digital threats and surveillance in journalistic activities.
