Englischsprachige Ankündigung:
On 23 November, the Berlin Film Society, Reporters Without Borders Germany and Berliner Union Film present a preview screening of the documentary City of Ghosts by Matthew Heineman. The screening will take place in one of the Berliner Union Film studios. Following the screening, a panel discussion including representatives of Reporters Without Borders and Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently will shed light on the current situation of media freedom in Syria and its perspectives after the end of IS rule over Raqqa.
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Matthew Heineman follows up Cartel Land with another real-life international thriller. With deeply personal access, City of Ghosts is the story of a brave group of Syrian citizen journalists risking their lives to stand up against the Islamic State in Raqqa.
About City of Ghosts
A real-life international thriller, City of Ghosts exposes a new type of warfare: a battle over ideas, a fight for hearts and minds, a conflict over clicks and views. Captivating in its immediacy, it follows the journey of Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently - a handful of anonymous activists who banded together after their homeland was taken over by ISIS in 2014. With astonishing, deeply personal access, this is the story of a brave group of citizen journalists as they face the realities of life undercover, on the run, and in exile, risking their lives to stand up against one of the greatest evils in the world today.
About Reporters Without Borders
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is an international non-governmental organization promoting and defending media freedom worldwide. Drawing on a network of sections, offices and correspondents around the world, RSF continuously monitors and denounces attacks on journalists, citizen journalists and media organizations, campaigns against censorship and against laws aimed restricting media freedom and gives practical assistance to persecuted journalists. When the situation for Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently became more and more dangerous, RSF helped the group’s activists rent a safe house in Istanbul, lobbied German authorities to grant them a legal status on short notice and supported the group after their arrival in Germany.
