Karim Assaad

Karim Assaad ist ein ägyptischer Journalist, der sich auf Faktenchecks und OSINT-Recherchen spezialisiert hat. Im Laufe seiner zehnjährigen Karriere hat er über Korruption, Desinformation und die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung in Ägypten berichtet.

Assaad hat als freiberuflicher Journalist für mehrere Medien gearbeitet, unter anderem für Al-Monitor, DW (Sulta5) und Ida’at. Derzeit arbeitet er als leitender Redakteur für Matsda2sh, die größte ägyptische Plattform für Faktenchecks und OSINT-Recherchen.

Wie riskant Assaads Arbeit ist, hat der Journalist schon mehrmals zu spüren bekommen. Im August 2023 haben ihn ägyptische Sicherheitskräfte festgenommen und bedroht, nachdem er einen Bericht über die Verwicklung regierungsnaher Personen in eine gescheiterte Goldschmuggelaktion in Sambia veröffentlicht hatte.

Assaad ist derzeit mit dem Auszeit-Stipendium von RSF und der taz Panter Stiftung in Berlin. Hier bildet er sich in digitaler Sicherheit weiter, besucht Workshops und Schulungen und lernt neue Sprachen.

Karim Assaad is an Egyptian journalist specializing in fact-checking and open-source investigations. Throughout his 10-year career, he has produced dozens of reports and investigations on corruption, misinformation, and the economic conditions in Egypt.

He has worked as a freelance journalist with several news outlets such as Al-Monitor, DW (Sulta5), and Ida’at, and is currently a senior editor at Matsda2sh (Don't Believe), the largest Egyptian platform for fact-checking and open-source investigations.

Over the years, Karim has been exposed to numerous risks due to his work, the most recent of which occurred in August 2023, when he was arrested, assaulted, and threatened by Egyptian security after publishing an investigation about the involvement of individuals close to the government in a failed gold smuggling operation in Zambia. He is still facing serious consequences because of his work.

Karim is currently in Berlin on a fellowship from Reporters Without Borders and the taz Panter Foundation. There, he continues his education in digital security, attends workshops and training courses, and is learning new languages.
